Essential On-Page SEO Techniques for UK Websites
On-page SEO covers everything on the page itself that helps search engines and visitors understand it: the title, headings, text, images, links and URL. These are the techniques we apply to every important page.

Title tags
Write a unique, descriptive title for every page, with the main topic near the start. Around 50 to 60 characters usually displays in full.
Meta descriptions
Not a ranking factor, but a good description can improve clicks. Summarise the page and give a reason to visit in around 150 to 160 characters.
Headings
Use one H1 that matches the page's purpose, and H2 and H3 headings that outline the content logically.
Content
Answer the main question early, cover related questions and use the language your customers use. See content optimisation best practices.
Internal links
Link to related pages with descriptive anchor text, not 'click here'. Make sure important pages receive links from relevant content.
Images
Use descriptive file names, accurate alt text, modern formats such as WebP or AVIF, and set dimensions to avoid layout shift.
URLs
Short, lowercase, hyphen-separated and descriptive, for example /local-seo-uk-businesses/. Keep URLs stable once published.
